New Delhi, 14 October, 2026: Major champions and Indian ambitions meet at a course that demands respect at DP World India Championship

The names on the field sheet may belong to the highest reaches of world golf, but at the DP World India Championship, the first lesson for even the most decorated champions will come from the course itself. At Delhi Golf Club (DGC), power is not always an advantage, reputation offers no protection, and a player who fails to understand the land can quickly find himself in trouble.

From October 15 to 18, a world-class field featuring Major champions, Ryder Cup stars and some of the biggest names in international golf will gather in the Indian capital for a tournament that carries significance well beyond its US$4 million prize money. For the visiting stars, it is an opportunity to compete in a distinctive setting and add another title to their resumes. For Indian golf, it is a rare chance to stand alongside the game’s elite on home soil and show how far the country’s ambitions can reach.

Rory McIlroy.

Rory McIlroy’s presence and a strong international contingent give the championship global stature. For McIlroy, one of the defining players of his generation, every appearance brings the expectation of contention.

He is now thrilled to be back, and this time he is also DP World’s Global Ambassador. He said, “I had a wonderful experience here last year, and I come here now as a DP World ambassador. (I’ve) deepened my relationship with the company that puts on this event and is also the umbrella sponsor of the DP World Tour. (I’m) obviously very happy to be back and representing them.”

He also remembered the challenges the DGC threw up and said, “Just as tight as I remember from last year. It’s definitely a different golf course than what we’re used to playing. It doesn’t offer you a lot of room off the tee – a lot of irons and strategic play with your tee shots.

This year I think the rough is a lot longer and thicker than it was last year, so that’s going to present a challenge. But if you’re hitting irons off tees, you shouldn’t really be in the rough, I will be telling myself that tomorrow.”

Defending champion Tommy Fleetwood is excited to be back. His form may not be as sharp as last year, but the motivation is strong and there is a determination to extend his lease on the Lotus Trophy. The scenes of his son Frankie rushing to greet him on the 18th green are still etched in fans’ memories.

Fleetwood laughed and revealed, “Yeah, Frankie and Clare are here. He came on the putting green with me yesterday. He generally gives me some tips when I’m practising.”

Tommy Fleetwood.

Fleetwood added, “It’s always really nice coming back when you’ve had a great tournament the year before at that venue. I think this tournament last year came at a time when I was playing amazing golf. Probably some of the best of my career. I think when I do look back, when I come here, I’m always going to be grateful for the moments that I got with Frankie there on the 18th green.”

The Indian interest is just as compelling. The challenge for the home players is not merely to make up the numbers in a field of champions, but to compete with the belief that a memorable week could change the course of their careers.

Delhi Golf Club is no ordinary championship venue. Its tree-lined fairways, tight corridors, strategic bunkering and demanding greens make it a course that rewards patience, imagination and precision.

For the Indian contingent, the occasion carries an additional dimension. Playing at home brings familiarity with the conditions, the support of local spectators and an understanding of the subtle demands of Delhi Golf Club. It also brings expectations.

Shubhankar Sharma, a two-time DP World Tour winner, returns to Delhi with renewed confidence after a victory the previous week. His knowledge of the course and experience at the highest level make him one of the most interesting Indian contenders. A strong performance here would offer more than a satisfying home result, and it could provide momentum for a player seeking to re-establish himself.

Anirban Lahiri brings a different kind of experience, having competed against elite fields across the world and represented India on major international stages. His presence adds depth to the home challenge.

Saptak Talwar and other leading Indian prospects also have a chance to make the championship count. In a field of this quality, a competitive four rounds can be significant, but a genuine challenge for the title would be transformative. His Asian Games teammates, Veer Ahlawat and Yuvraj Sandhu, will also be watched closely.

Karandeep Kochhar, Sachin Baisoya and Shiv Kapur add further depth and experience to the Indian challenge. Kochhar arrives after finishing runner-up at the IGPL’s Krishna Invitational in Hyderabad, while Baisoya, another consistent performer on the domestic circuit, will be keen to make the most of a rare opportunity to compete against an elite international field.

Kapur, who grew up playing golf at DGC, has experience which will give him a valuable understanding of the demands of this level.

The Indian challenge, however, suffered a setback with Gaganjeet Bhullar withdrawing because of a back injury. The 11-time Asian Tour winner would have brought considerable international experience and a proven winning pedigree to the field. His absence is a blow.

There is another Indian story unfolding beneath the international spectacle. The championship is co-sanctioned by the DP World Tour and the DP World Professional Golf Tour of India, connecting the country’s domestic circuit directly with the global game. The leading player on the PGTI Order of Merit at the end of the week will earn playing rights on the DP World Tour for 2027, making the tournament potentially career-defining for Saptak Talwar, Khalin Joshi and Veer Ahlawat in their battle for the domestic season’s top position.

Ultimately, the DP World India Championship is about bringing two golfing worlds closer together. It gives Indian professionals access to an international stage, gives fans the opportunity to watch champions at close quarters and gives the sport in India a tournament around which bigger ambitions can be built.

DP World India Championship is proud to welcome its Title Sponsor DP World; Platinum Sponsors Hero Fincorp, AM Green and Bloomberg; Premium Partners AWS, GMR Aero and HSBC; Official Partners ALDAR, HCL Tech, Omega, Kohler and Emirates; and Official Suppliers Bisleri, Medanta, Nicobar, The Oberoi, House of Glenfiddich, TaylorMade India and Pocari Sweat.
