Rich tributes were paid to late Yash Pal Sharma, a former Test cricketer and an important member of 1983 World Cup winner Indian team, by Cricketers, Coaches, Umpires, Cricket Administrater and sports Journalists, in a well attended opening ceremony.

Mr. Sunil Valson said, “I have played with and against him and worked with him in different committees. He was a true sportsman, who always played with great sprit and had a habit to fought till the end.”

Mr. Vijay Bahadur Mishra said, ” I have attracted towards playing cricket only after watching Yash Pal ji in local tournaments of Delhi and with his inspiration got the job in State Bank also. He always guided me to become a better cricketer. We are organizing this tournament in his memory and would like to invite all the members of 1983 Indian cricket team, which includes BCCI President Mr. Roger Binny, for the final match. That would be great tribute to the departed soul.”

Yash Pal was also a first class Umpire. He has also served as National Selector. He was retired from State Bank of India.

Vijay Bahadur Mishra, former Ranji Trophy player, is organizing the tournament in the memory of his senior cricketer from State Bank of India.Top eight teams are participating in the tournament.

Veteran cricket Coach Mr. Virender Bhatnagar brought the scoresheet of a domestic match played almost fifty years ago, in which, Yash Pal Sharma had scored a century. ” I first saw him playing cricket in Ludhiana, Punjab. He was very hard working, ” he said.

Mr. Rakesh Thapliyal, Editor-in-Chief of Khel Today Magazine and Website www.kheltoday.com said, ” I know Yash Pal ji right from my childhood days, because two of my uncle, Gyaneshwar and Rajeshwar have represented State Bank cricket team, with him. He was a fighter and fitness loving hard worker in whatever roll he was given he always performed with full honesty. When he became the National Selector, he never discussed anything related to the selection. Whenever I asked, he never disclosed even the place and timming of the selection committee meetings. He always played with ‘Straight Bat’ and true fighting sprit and never intrested in giving an inch to the opponent team, so all the players, participating in this tournament should fight till the last ball of the match and that would be great tribute to late Yash Pal ji.”
