Lucknow: Alka had to be satisfied with the Bronze medal in the previous two editions of the Khelo India University Games held at Bhubaneshwar and Bangalore as she lost her semifinals in Sabre. She was more determined this time as she wanted to convert those bronze medals into Gold. In the finals against defending champion Jagmeet Kaur, Alka representing Kannur University was so elated that she had tears in her eyes after securing the 15th point to win the final and the elusive Gold Medal.

Alka V. Sunny, a 21-year-old from the beautiful tourist destination Wayanad, Kerala, practices at the SAI Centre, Thalassery, Kannur. She is hoping to continue this form into the trails for the Asian Games in Delhi and also the trials for the World University Games.

An effervescent smile on her face while wearing this gold medal embodies her hard work, devotion, consistency, practice for 5–6 hours each day, and dedication for the sport, which will inspire an extensive number of young people to follow in her footsteps. She establishes herself as a valuable asset in front of youngsters.

Her journey has an appealing fascination; although coming from a lower middle-class household, she refuses to give up and is a firm believer in following one’s aspirations. Taking part in junior championships in Odisha at the age of barely 10, she began her quest. She had no idea that she would pursue this professionally, in fact.

She started fencing unexpectedly, merely out of interest, and is now enthusiastically claiming medals. Moreover, her father is a farmer and a nurse mother. In spite of the challenges she had at home, her parents, friends and coach always stood by her side, no matter what the circumstances.

Regarding her achievements, she earned silver medals at the Senior National Championship and the All India Fencing Games this year. In 2018, she won a bronze medal in fencing at the Commonwealth Games.

She was also awarded by bronze medal in the women’s ranking tour, which took place in Delhi, Chennai, and Odisha.

She expressed her intention to lead this game to the pinnacle of the level where it should be while outlining her future plans, which include winning gold at the forthcoming Asian Championship and World Championship. She aspired to win medals on a global stage and elevate the sport of fencing to new heights of glory.

She is working extremely hard in order to achieve her ultimate goal of winning medals at the Olympics.
