Shubman Gill to lead India’s squads in Test and ODI Series against Afghanistan

New Delhi: Shubman Gill has been named captain of Team India for the Test and ODI series against Afghanistan.
The Men’s Selection Committee met in Guwahati to pick India’s squads for the upcoming IDFC First Bank one Test and three ODIs against Afghanistan.

Top Indian fast bowler Jaspreet Bumrah has been rested for the Test and ODIs. Former Captain Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya have been picked for the ODIs subject to fitness clearance. “Bumrah will be back when we tour England. He is working on his workload,” Chairman selection Committee Ajit Agarkar told reporters after the selection meeting.

Manav Suthar, Gurnoor Brar, Harsh Dubey and Prince Yadav (for ODIs only) are new faces included in the Indian Team.

The first ODI has been rescheduled and will now be played on June 13, 2026 at Dharamshala.

When asked about Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Agarkar said, “Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has done well, but let’s not forget Yashasvi Jaiswal. As impressive as he is, Jaiswal has done as well. Vaibhav has done well to get to the A team, hope he does well there.”

“We have been told that at this point, T20 cricket is what he is ready, so there was no discussion regarding Mohammed Shami. There was chat around Auqib Nabi. Rishabh remains a part of Test squad and an incredible player. He’s not part of ODI squad but right now he’s a key part of Test team,” said Agarkar.
