Khel Today Bureau

New Delhi: The future of Indian golf is in bright hands and this fact was reiterated with aplomb as  14-year old Karamjit Bedi drained a 5-feet putt to ensure a title win for ‘Christie’s Golf’ in the Finals of the third edition of the ‘Lloyd Delhi Golf Club League – Powered by Radico’.  ‘Christie’s Golf’ beat ‘The Pioneers’ by half a point, with the Champions carding 8 points and the runners-up, 7.5 points.

Team ‘Deutsche Motoren’ finished third, beating ‘Sterling Swingers’ 11 points to 6 points in the match for the 3rd and 4th positions.

The prizes were given away by  the Sponsors and DGC Committee Members at a gala Prize Distribution Ceremony held right after the tournament concluded.

All eyes were preened on the third-last match of the day as ‘Christie’s Golf’ battled ‘The Pioneers’.  Karamjit Bedi was  staring down a chip shot to the left of the 18th green.  A miscalculated effort could have proved disastrous.  The young boy held his nerve, to chip the ball to 5 feet from the pin.   For ‘The Pioneers’, Rishabh Periwal failed to drain a 10 feet putt which would have given his team the upper-hand.  Karam was then left with two-putts to win the game for ‘Christie’s Golf’. He did it in one.

‘The Pioneers’, touted as the underdog in this battle of giants, started off with a win in the first match.  The second match was squared by both teams. ‘Christie’s Golf’ pulled back with a win in the third match, but ‘The Pioneers’ carded a win in the fourth.  Back-to-back wins in the fifth and the sixth matches handed ‘Christie’s Golf’ the title despite ‘The Pioneers winning the seventh match.

In the Play-off for the 3rd and 4th positions, ‘Deutsche Motoren’ got the better of ‘Sterling Swingers’ carding 11 points, as against their opponents’ 6 points.

‘Sterling Swingers’ began in style with a win in the first match but ‘Deutsche Motoren’ staged a remarkable recovery to win the next four matches in a row.  ‘Sterling Swingers’ managed to win the sixth match but with both teams squaring the seventh and final match, ‘Deutsche Motoren’ claimed the third position.

The tournament was being played on a ‘Four-ball better-ball Matchplay’ Format.  The League was played in two stages – a Round Robin stage followed by a Knock-out stage. During each playoff match between two teams, each team was allowed to field 7 pairs (14 players). One pair from each team played against a pair from the other team in a “Four-ball better-ball” Matchplay format with all the players playing off 75% of their original handicaps. The teams got points for their wins. The 22 teams were divided into 4 groups. After the Round Robin stage, 2 teams from each group qualified for the Knock-out stage starting with the Quarter-finals.
